Bertha benz is the wife of mercedes Benz founder, Karl Benz.  Back in 1888, she was simply curious about her husband’s Motorwagen invention.  So one day in 1888, she went out with her teenage sons  Eugen and Richard to test it out.  It was a 65-mile drive from Mannheim to Pforzheim, where Bertha’s mother lived.

The Motorwagen or the Patent-Motorwagen was considered the very first automobile.  It doesn’t look quite much like a car but it does have rear-mounted engine and it is an open three-wheeler.

Bertha and her sons returned to Mannheim after a few days with quite an adventure to tell. Their driving venture did give tremendous improvement to the first automobile.  With her sons, Eugen and Richard, these were some of the things that they experienced along the way and what Bertha did to keep them going.
•    In order to fix a wire, Bertha made use a piece of elastic from her garter.
•    Since there weren’t any gas stations during those times ( for obvious reasons), Bertha had to find a way to re-fuel.  So to keep the engine of the Motorwagen running, she had to buy ‘ligroin’ from a pharmacy.  This liquid is a cleaning fluid.
•    Brake linings were invented because of the ineffective wood-block brakes wherein Bertha used leather pads instead.
•    The coolant boiled off and almost made the engine overheat, hence they stayed close to water in order to replenish it.  This is the reason why there are pressurized cooling systems and radiators in cars.
•    The Motorwagen engine wasn’t so powerful and the gearing barely allowed them to drive up some hills, that’s why Bertha helped push the Motorwagen up a few hills.

Thanks to this first drive test of Bertha and her sons, mercedes-benz and other vehicles didn’t have to go through what they’ve experienced,which was quite a ride!

Mauro Calo, one of Mercedes-Benz’ driver was able to set a new world record for the “Longest car Drift” in London, on June 21.  Calo accomplished this by using a C63 amg sedan, continuously power-sliding it for more than 2.3 kilometres.  He completed an overall drift distance of 2308 metres, surpassing the 1914 metre record of the former record holder, Vaughn Gittin Jr.

Calo’s record-breaking feat happened at the mercedes-benz World in Surrey, Britain.  He performed his impressive drift driving on a narrow circle of bitumen.  According to Sydney Morning Herald, he was finally forced to finish up after 7 laps due to the shredded rear tyres.  Calo was commended by Mercedes-benz due to the new record he was able to establish.
