Eleven years after its launch, the one millionth unit of the BMW X5 rolled off the assembly line at Spartanburg, South Carolina.

This amazing landmark in production coincides with the Australian launch of new variants designed as mid-life updates for the multi-awarded BMW X5. They are the X5 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive40d and X5xDrive50i. The BMW X5 remains the leading luxury SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) in Australia. For the last seven years, it has consistently outsold its competitors.

In 1999, at the time of its launch, the BMW X5 was a unique, one-of-a-kind vehicle. Most impressive about the four-wheel driven vehicle was its ability to combine truly excellent driving performance on the road with exceptional traction and stability off-road. Achieving this feat of design at the level that the X5 delivered made the rest of the automotive world take notice of BMW.

Over the years, the BMW X5 continues to exemplify the success and benefits of the Sports Activity Vehicle concept. Several awards for design, quality and reliability have been garnered by the X5. The trade journal “auto motor und sport” awarded it the “autonis” design prize for most attractive design in 2007. In the same year, it also received a Gold Award from the J.D. Power Study on consumer satisfaction in North America.

For 2007 and 2008, it was named “Top Safety Pick” with regards to its behavior in crash testing by the American Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). In terms of reliability, it ranked second only to the BMW X3 in the all-terrain category, according to breakdown statistics issued by ADAC, the premier automobile club in Europe.

The BMW Spartanburg plant in South Carolina has housed the primary production line for the BMW X5 since its inception, and it can be said that it has grown together with the model. It has been in operation for 15 years now, and is the knowledge center for the design and development of the BMW X model series. Along with the X5, the X6 is also being produced in the same plant, and by the end of the year, the newest X3 variants will also originate from this important location.

The BMW Group starts the New Year strong with a marked increase in sales. A total of 82,120 vehicles were under the BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce brands in the month of January 2010, compared to 70,149 units the previous year. This amounted to an increase of 16.6% in the group’s total sales.

Moreover, all three brands made substantial gains, reports Ian Robertson, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG. He also said that this surge had led the BMW Group to target higher goals for the rest of the year, intending to sell more than 1.3 million vehicles. They are looking to the new BMW 5 Series and the MINI Countryman to lead the charge in their respective segments.

Sales of automobiles under the BMW brand increased by 15.9% to a total of 69,852, compared to 60,262 the previous year, for the particular month of January. All of the brand’s major series enjoyed an increase, led by the BMW Z4 reporting a 278.5% increase, a total of 1,552 deliveries over 410 the previous year. The BMW 7 Series also impressed, increasing by 89.8%, with 4,742 deliveries versus 2,498 the previous year. The BMW X5 and X6 series has a combined total of 10,565 deliveries over 9,665 the previous year. These three model series continue as market leaders worldwide in their particular segments.

This January, the delivery volumes for models from the BMW 3 Series rose by 7.1%, reaching a total of 22,501, compared to 21,001 in the same month last year.  This model series has been the backbone of BMW sales, consistently enjoying the largest sales volume.

On top of the anticipated demand for its successor launching in March, the BMW 5 Series Sedan also enjoyed an increase in deliveries, with 9,314 purchases this January, over 8,880 last year.

The BMW range expanded late last year with the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo and the BMW X1. At least 4,093 units for the BMW X1 and 933 units for the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo have already been delivered in January, despite both models not being available in major markets yet.

Other brands in the BMW group also enjoyed a great start to the year. The MINI brand sold 12,181 vehicles, versus 10,120 last year, amounting to a 20.4% increase in sales. Rolls-Royce, on the other hand, delivered 87 automobiles in the month of January, up by 135.1% over last year, a very remarkable figure for the luxury car segment. Definite orders for its new model, the Ghost, will last until mid-year.

This successful start to the new year is also shared by the Motorcycle Segment. BMW Motorrad reported a 2.2% increase in January deliveries, 3,814 units over 3,731 last year.

For the month of January, the entire BMW Group enjoyed increased retail volumes across all continents, proving the effectiveness of its marketing and designs in multiple markets and vehicle segments.

The BMW Dealer of the Year award is the most coveted accolade amongst its widespread dealer network. The award is in recognition of outstanding customer service, professionalism and all-around performance throughout the year.

BMW Group Australia hosted the night for the BMW Dealer of the Year awards. For 2009, Motorline BMW and Jeff Tracy BMW have been declared as its exclusive winners.

Motorline BMW has been a Metropolitan Dealer of the Year awardee for two of the past three years, having won the trophy also in 2007. The dealership is located in South East Queensland, with a facility spanning three separate buildings. Established over 12 years ago, they have grown to be one of the most impressive dealerships, having a BMW-accredited body show and fully-licensed bistro of their own.

Craig Rose, the Dealer Prinicpal of Motorline BMW, was thrilled to receive the second award for his dealership, and thanked the entire team of BMW. He added that, since establishing Motorline BMW 12 years ago, they have constantly worked to provide a “special buying experience.” He said that this was done through the special events hosted by his dealership, and by following up with customers in every department. Receiving the award, according to him, was proof that the dealership is in line with its promise.

Receiving its fifth BMW Rural Dealer of the Year award was Jeff Tracy BMW. This dealership, located in Shepparton Victoria, has been acknowledged as the nation’s best rural dealer for many years.

Jeff Tracy, its Dealer Principal, is head of this family-owned and run business which has run successfully for the past 14 years. He said that he and his team hold the award in the highest regard. He also mentioned being excited about the new BMW products coming out this year.

For six years now, BMW remains as Australia’s best-selling luxury vehicle brand. It remains as the brand more Australians choose for their premium motoring needs. It again garnered more than 17,000 passenger/SUV registrations. No other premium manufacturer can make this claim.

In the world of product design, the red dot award has come to be one of the most important and coveted accolades.  It has become synonymous with the highest levels of innovation and quality for products in different industries.

Last July 5th, the ceremonies were held in the Essen Aalto Theater, and the BMW Group won six prizes this year, yet again confirming the brand’s expertise and leadership in design.

Headlining the brand’s victories is the new Rolls-Royce Ghost, bringing home one of the three special “red dot: best of the best” awards in the Automobiles, Transports and Caravans category. This iconic masterpiece successfully blends the brand’s classic values and styling with the new design ideals of the 21st century. Its unique and unmistakable profile highlights the fact that it is the most powerful Rolls Royce ever built.

Another victory for design goes to the BMW 5 Series Sedan. It garnered a red dot award by virtue of its charismatic and elegant exterior, reflecting the supreme comfort of its interiors and the excellent drive quality of its engine. It truly is the realized vision of a powerful luxury sedan, as per the design team at BMW.

The BMW X1, with is striking profile and distinct features, was likewise recognized with a red dot award in 2010. The long and flowing lines of the X1 captured a sense of seamless elegance that put it above the competition.

In the motorcycle division, BMW also received a red dot award for its BMW F 800 R. This medium-category motorbike took a cue from the designs of much larger 4-cylinder machines (such as the K 1300 R) and brought a new look and feel to the segment. The BMW Motorrad, which is in charge of the design and development of its motorcycles, has long been a much-recognized and multi-awarded competitor in the segment.

The BMW S 100 RR is supersports bike characterized by an innovative look. It involves a low front section and high rear, as well as asymmetrical design cues. BMW Brings Home Six Prizes at 2010 Red Dot Awards is a post from: Luxury Cars Sydney

In an amazing parallel to what happened 70 years ago, BMW has taken first and third places in the 2010 Mille Miglia. In 1940, the BMW 328 Mille Miglia Touring Coupé won the race for which the model was named for, as well as taking third place. Fast forward to 2010, history repeats itself as the same model achieves the same feat in this legendary Italian race.

The BMW 328 was leading sports car back in the late 1930s. It gained popularity by winning a lot of the races at the time. One of the biggest victories it had was in the Mille Miglia in 1940, a race of over 1,000 miles. It was piloted by Fritz Huschke von Hanstein and co-piloted by Walter Baumer. They took victory by averaging 100 miles per hour (160 kph) in the 328 Touring Coupé.

This year, the team of Giuliano Cané and Lucia Galliani took top honors in the same event, and they did not experience any mechanical or technical problems at all for the entire race. This is a remarkable feat given the weather conditions. The race course took them from the warm coast of the Adriatic to the freezing mountain air of the Monte Terminillo.

An even bigger testament to the superior engineering and durability of the car was the fact that it was not carried by race transporters, but driven from Munich over to Brescia in Italy for the start of the race. This was also done 70 years ago. Karl Baumer, Director of BMW Classic, called this pre-race journey a “… perfect dress rehearsal for the race.”

To better allow them to survive the elements and changing weather conditions, the drivers were clad in BMW Motorrad weatherproof motorcycle gear for the journey and the race itself.

Another team, composed of Enzo Ciravolo and Maria Leitner, also took third place this year in a series-production 328. This replicates the fantastic results of BMW in the 1940 Mille Miglia.

Because of the nature of the race, the diverse and inclement weather conditions were a cause for concern. However, all the participants, meaning the teams and the cars, were able to make it safely to the finish. This was the primary concern of Karl Baumer. “Our great result,” he said, “is the icing on the cake.”

Baumer also thanked the teams, the crews and the mechanics, citing the victory as a “marvelous example of teamwork.”

The New M Sport Style

Sleek, sporting and elegant. These are the words to describe the two new 3 Series models launched by BMW Australia : the 335i M Sport model and M3, the latest 3 Series Coupe and Convertible. Both models retain the outstanding 225kW of power and 400Nm of torque as the 335i predecessor, but the new 335i M Sport reduces fuel consumption to 8.4 litres per 100km for the Coupe and 8.8 litres per 100km for the Convertible. This is done via the new 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo Technology engine with High Precision Injection and VALVTRONIC fully variable valve management.

This new engine has been mated to either a standard six-speed manual gearbox or optional seven-speed Sports Automatic Double-Clutch Transmission. New gearshift paddles make for quicker and easier shifts, enabling the seven-speed Coupe to sprint from 0-100km/h in just 5.4 seconds.

Beyond what’s under the hood, the 335i M Sport Coupe and Convertible feature a distinct new style featuring a full aerodynamic M Sport body kit with 19-inch double spoke light alloy wheels. Inside, redesigned door sills, multi-function steering wheel, aluminum trim and the BMW Individual anthracite headliner enhance the sporty and elegant feel.

To ensure the driving experience is still trademark BMW, that is, the ultimate driving pleasure, the new series comes standard with lowered, stiffer M Sport suspension, connecting the driver to the road. Five models are offered to match the driving taste and requirements of 3 Series enthusiasts. Sold as both the two-door Coupe and the hardtop four-seater Convertible, there are two diesel models, the 320d and 330d. There are also three petrol models : the entry level 325i, the new 335i M Sport and top-end M3.

Performance, Power and Efficiency

The new M Sport features a range of powerful and efficient engines that meet the strict Euro 5 emissions regulations. The 320d is the leader for efficiency, with an upgraded 2.0-litre turbo diesel four cylinder powerplant that produces 5kW more power and 30Nm more torque, while providing reduced fuel consumption. It is able to generate a maximum power of 135kW at 400rpm and peak torque at 380Nm between 1900 to 2750rpm.

Mated to the new six-speed gearbox, fuel consumption for the 320d is outstanding, covering 4.7l/100km for the Coupe and 5.1l/100km for the Convertible. This newly designed manual gearbox, a first for the 320d model, allows the use of BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, including the standard Auto Stop/Start function.

In the 325i, a straight six cylinder 2.5-litre engine generates peak outputs of 160kW at 6500rpm and 250Nm from 2750rpm – 4250rpm, enabling the BMW 325i Coupe to sprint from 0-100km/h in 6.7 seconds (Convertible 7.8 s). Again, matched to the six-speed manual gearbox, fuel consumption is 7.2l/100km for the Coupe and 9.2l/100km for the Convertible, providing ample power and fuel efficiency. Six-speed automatic transmission is available for both the 320d and 325i.

The 330d provides high performance and efficiency with its 3.0-litre straight six turbo diesel that generates 180kW at 4000rpm and an amazing 520Nm of torque between a low 1750rpm – 3000rpm. The 330d Coupe goes from zero to 100km/h in just 6.1 seconds, while using only 6.2 liters of fuel for every 100km (manual six-speed gearbox).

At the top tier is the new M3. BMW was able to improve the efficiency of its famous 309kW/400Nm 4.0-litre V8 engine by utilizing the standard Auto Stop/ Start feature on both the six-speed manual gearbox and seven-speed Sports Automatic Double-Clutch Transmission. Fuel consumption has improved by six percent by applying the Auto Stop/Start technology the automatic transmission, a first for BMW. The result is the automatic M3 Coupe delivering a combined fuel consumption of 11.2l/100km (with M-DCT).

The new automatic M3 Coupe is able to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.6 seconds (with M-DCT), and the Convertible in 5.1 seconds (with 7-speed sports automatic transmission). All this contribute to the supreme driving experience of the M3 models, and BMW is offering a Competition Package for the M3 Coupe for those who want even more control and improved handling. This option give the driver a continually adjustable Electronic Damper Control (EDC) system that includes a new Sport mode, modified calibration of the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), M Drive and M Y-spoke design 19-inch alloy wheels.

The new BMW 3 Series Coupe and Convertible inspire both driver and passenger with superior comfort and safety features. Standard across the line, beginning with the 320d, are climate control, cruise control, power windows, heated exterior mirrors, Bi-Xenon headlights, front and rear fog lights,partial electric seat adjustment for driver and front passenger, and automatic windscreen wipers.

All models also feature safety equipment features, such as Antilock Braking System (ABS) with brake assist and Cornering Brake Control (CBC), dual front, front side and full length side curtain airbags, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Rain Sensor, active front head restraints, and rear Park Distance Control (PDC).

At the 24-hour race of 2010 in Nürburgring-Nordschleife, the team of BMW Motorsport has made a grand come back by emerging as the champion. The no. 25 BMW M3 GT2 garnered its 19th win during this epic endurance race. Its last victory was five years ago.

After 154 laps around the 25.378-kilometre circuit, the champion car made it to the finish line. Part of this winning team were Augusto Farfus (BR), Uwe Alzen (DE),  Jörg Müller (DE) and Pedro Lamy (PT) who took the wheel at the time they crossed. These four drivers performed amazingly as they garnered the first prize even with some technical difficulties with their gearbox in the final three hours of the race.

The Director for BMW Motorsport Mario Theissen said in an interview that this victory that they had in this 24-hour race reminded him of their victory in Le Mans back in 1999. He gives high praise to Jörg Müller and Uwe Alzen for being able to overcome many obstacles when it seemed their triumph was going to be difficult to attain. He also extends his gratitude to all their supporters.

After their victories in the years 1989, 1990, 2004 and 2005, the Schnitzer Motorsport team has garnered its fifth win in the “Green Hell”. In an interview, Team Manager Charly Lamm said that the commitment that the team had displayed was really amazing. In a short span of time, they had to put together the most effective package. Reliability was an important factor that contributed to their victory.

A big factor in the triumph of the Schnitzer Motorsport was their flawless and speedy workmanship that has been apparent for many years. When Werner crashed around the eighth lap, the mechanics went to work swiftly, replacing the front-left suspension, the rear-left shock absorber and the radiatoe on the number 26 BMW M3 GT2. The car that won was not free of problems either. It suffered a tire damage on the 46th lap and a radiator problem six laps after that. As though this was not enough, a problematic gearbox followed suit in the final three hours of the race.  This resulted to extra pit stops, but it did not stop the efficiency and focus of the team.  As a result, in the last two hours, they were back at the head of the game.

This is the fifth time on the Nordschleife that victory has been seen with Pedro Lamy, who is now part of the all-time winners’ list. A second victory in one of the most difficult circuits of the world is in the hands of Jörg Müller and Uwe Alzen. Agusto Farfus also takes the glory of being a part of the Nordschleife history books.

The famous 24 hours of Le Mans began at 3pm on June 12th. The participation of the 17th BMW Art Car by Jeff Koons was a major highlight at this event.  This race is known to be the oldest endurance race in the world of all sports car racing. It is also known as the Grand Prix of Endurance. It gives a challenge to both the car and the driver’s ability.

The BMW M3 GT2 came from the high performance sports car BMW M3. It has an upgraded chassis, an extensive use of materials that are lightweight, it has a 4.0 liter V8 engine that can give an output of up to 500 bhp and it also has racing-caliber brakes. It also has the ability to reach 100km/h in only 3.4 seconds.

During the launch of the 17th BMW Art Car, Jeff Koons put his autograph on the car. This launch was done in Centre Pompidou, which is one of the top cultural institutions for contemporary and modern art in the world.

The creation of this work of art included a collection of pictures of vibrant colors, race cars, speed, explosions and other related pictures. Koons created a burst of bright colors that gives the feeling of power, energy and motion. It was a challenge in creating this Art Car to use material that is light-weight and a design that would be complementary to the car’s weight and aerodynamics.

Koons landed this role in designing the BMW Art Car by beginning to express his wish to do it back in 2003. He is known for his enthusiasm in appreciating cars. He was also mentioned by U2’s lead singer, Bono, as one of the best artists to design an automobile so that people would share the same love for cars again. Koons’ art processes even resemble car painting and assembling techniques.

They have had many famous artists such as Warhol, Stella, Hockney, Lichtenstein, Holzer and Rauschenberg design their cars. Two brand new model grades have been released for the amazing BMW 3 Series Sedan and Touring. With this new grade, BMW had once again proved that they are the leaders for premium compact sporting cars. The straight-six cylinder 323i and the four-cylinder 320i and 320d Executive have now become the 320d Lifestyle or 323i Lifestyle and the 320i Lifestyle. These brand new Lifestyle editions have features that are priced at around $3000, which is only an $800 increase from the original price. On the other hand, the Exclusive editions have only a $500 increase.

The Lifestyle editions of the BMW 320d, 323i and 320i have new features such as a package of Chrome Line Exterior, light alloy wheels of 17 inches and V-spoke 338, “Edition” motif door sill finisher and in the lower front apron, you will find a new chrome-finished decorative bar. The Lifestyle editions of 320i cost starts from $55,300 while the 320d and the 323i costs start at $59,100.

The Exclusive editions of the 325i and 330d, on the other hand, has new features such as Bamboo Grain fine wood trim, anthracite, Pearl Gray steering wheel inlay, “Edition” motif door sill finishers, Chrome Line Exterior, light alloy wheels of 17 inches and Star-spoke 339 and also a chrome-finished decorative bar in the front apron. There are several paint variants to choose from. In the non-metallic category, the new BMW 3 Series Sedan and Touring models are available in Alpine White. As for the metallic category, Space Grey, Titanium Silver, Black Sapphire and Bluewater are available.

The interior of all the models are made of Dakota Leather. They come in beige, oyster/black, grey, red, black/brown, black or saddle brown. You can choose from Fine-wood Burled Walnut, Fine-wood Walnut, Aluminum, Fine and Light for the trim.
